Observing Femtosecond Fragmentation Using Ultrafast X-ray-Induced Auger Spectra

چکیده
Molecules often fragment after photoionization in the gas phase. Usually, this process can only be investigated spectroscopically as long as there exists electron correlation between the photofragments. Important parameters, like their kinetic energy after separation, cannot be investigated. We are reporting on a femtosecond time-resolved Auger electron spectroscopy study concerning the photofragmentation dynamics of thymine. We observe the appearance of clearly distinguishable signatures from thymine′s neutral photofragment isocyanic acid. Furthermore, we observe a time-dependent shift of its spectrum, which we can attribute to the influence of the charged fragment on the Auger electron. This allows us to map our time-dependent dataset onto the fragmentation coordinate. The time dependence of the shift supports efficient transformation of the excess energy gained from photoionization into kinetic energy of the fragments. Our method is broadly applicable to the investigation of photofragmentation processes. Appl. Sci. 2017, 7, 681; doi:10.3390/app7070681 www.mdpi.com/journal/applsci Appl. Sci. 2017, 7, 681 2 of 11

Hetero-site-specific X-ray pump-probe spectroscopy for femtosecond intramolecular dynamics
New capabilities at X-ray free-electron laser facilities allow the generation of two-colour femtosecond X-ray pulses, opening the possibility of performing ultrafast studies of X-ray-induced phenomena. Particularly, the experimental realization of hetero-site-specific X-ray-pump/X-ray-probe spectroscopy is of special interest, in which an X-ray pump pulse is absorbed at one site within a molecu...
متن کاملUltrafast Electronic Processes in an Insulator: the Be and O Sites in BeO
The short-time dynamics of amorphous beryllium oxide (a-BeO) has been investigated for electronic excitation/ionization by fast incident electrons, as well as by Ar, Ar, Xe, and Xe ions at velocities of 6% to 10% the speed of light. Site specific Augerelectron spectra induced by fast heavy ions are the central point of this investigation. Electron induced Auger spectra serve as a reference and ...
متن کاملAngle-resolved electron spectroscopy of laser-assisted Auger decay induced by a few-femtosecond x-ray pulse.
Two-color (x-ray+infrared) electron spectroscopy is used for investigating laser-assisted KLL Auger decay following 1s photoionization of atomic Ne with few-femtosecond x-ray pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source. In an angle-resolved experiment, the overall width of the laser-modified Auger-electron spectrum and its structure change significantly as a function of the emission angle. The ...
متن کاملFemtosecond x-ray measurement of ultrafast melting and large acoustic transients.
Time-resolved x-ray diffraction with ultrashort ( approximately 300 fs), multi-keV x-ray pulses has been used to study the femtosecond laser-induced solid-to-liquid phase transition in a thin crystalline layer of germanium. Nonthermal melting is observed to take place within 300-500 fs. Following ultrafast melting we observe strong acoustic perturbations evolving on a picosecond time scale.
متن کاملDirectly observing squeezed phonon states with femtosecond x-ray diffraction.
Squeezed states are quantum states of a harmonic oscillator in which the variance of two conjugate variables each oscillate out of phase. Ultrafast optical excitation of crystals can create squeezed phonon states, where the variance of the atomic displacements oscillates due to a sudden change in the interatomic bonding strength. With femtosecond x-ray diffraction we measure squeezing oscillati...
